The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a brand new museum
in Winona, MN. It will open its doors the third
quarter of 2006. The mission of the Minnesota
Marine Art Museum is...
To enrich the human experience
To enable the joy of discovery
To elevate the spirit
all through the world of art.
The Museum will exhibit three major collections.
The Burrichter-Kierlin Marine Art Collection will
be on loan to the Museum, and consists of oil paintings
and three-dimensional marine art objects. The oil
paintings focus on the transition from sail to steam.
The Burrichter-Kierlin Collection is one of the
best privately held marine art collections in the
country!
The Museum will also house the most comprehensive
collection of Henry Bosse photographs and maps reprints.
Henry Bosse was named one of the "Photographers
of Genius" by the J. Paul Getty Museum in California.
He is very well known for his cyanotype photographs,
taken of small towns and river life along the Mississippi
River in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The third
collection is the Leo and Marilyn Smith Folk Art
Collection. The Folk Art Collection is comprised
of wood-carved and hand-painted sculptures created
in Fountain City, Wisconsin.
Finally, the Dredge William A. Thompson will become
a river history exhibit to the Museum once decommissioned
by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
