Like
many other small towns on the frontier, Red Wing
rode the waves of prosperity. Unlike some of the
others, however, it had the elasticity to bounce
back after the crashes. In part, this was due to
its charmed location. Set on bluffs overlooking
the Mississippi River and an hour south of Minneapolis/St.
Paul, this former wheat shipping port attracts outdoorsy
types and architecture buffs alike.
Its downtown is filled with restored buildings,
including the ornate Sheldon Performing Arts Theatre
where you can catch plays and country bands. Rooms
in the Italianate 130 year old restored St. James
Hotel contain handmade quilts and are named after
old river boats that once traveled the mighty Mississippi.
Spring, summer and fall, hundreds of baskets overflowing
with flowers hang from lamp posts and the river
comes alive with barges and excursion boats. In
the winter with a dusting of snow, Red Wing looks
like a painting from Currier and Ives. And there's
plenty to do no matter what the season.

In spring and
summer, enjoy a picnic in one of our landscaped
parks or dine in one of the fine restaurants
that Red Wing is noted for. Hike, bike, golf,
ride on a river boat, or attend a concert
in the park.
In the autumn, the leaves turn vibrant colors
and apples ripen on the trees making fall
a perfect time for a ride in the country or
around Lake Pepin. |

In the winter, both downhill
and cross country skiing are popular in this
area blessed by hills. Skating can be enjoyed
indoors at the Bergwall Arena and outdoors
on many neighborhood skating rinks. For those
who prefer to stay inside, Red Wing offers
casino gaming, shopping, and live performances
at the Sheldon Theatre and Treasure Island.

Whatever the season, there
are places to go and things to do in and around
Red Wing. When traveling in Southeastern Minnesota
or Northwestern Wisconsin, begin your journey
through the Mississippi River Valley in Red
Wing, the Gateway City. |
