    2. Art Opening, Mary St. John Quilt Show
      9:00 am – 11:30 am

Artist statement by Mary St. John: I started making quilts to use up fabric from making clothing. I teach Family & Consumer education and Health at Prescott High School. I still love the idea of being frugal by making things from what you already have. My first quilt was when I was about 14 years old in the 1960′s on my mother’s Singer Featherweight machine and was tied with yarn. This quilt has been patched several times and remains a favorite of my daughter. I made a couple of quilts that I quilted by hand, which is really a labor of love! My fellow teacher, Mari Lucas, got me back into quilting by joining the Hudson Heritage Quilters Guild. We have monthly meetings with show and tell and speakers. It’s a mixed age group and there is a lot of creativity in our area! Guests are welcome to attend meetings, see http://hudsonheritagequilters.weebly.com/meetings.html Quilting is a lot more accurate and quick with the use of rotary cutters, mats and rulers. No more cardboard templates! Many of my quilts have been gifts for graduations and weddings. My quilting has evolved over many years. There is a lot of inspiration on the Internet for fabric art and quilting. I have used the Pinterest site as a computer bulletin board to pin ideas for methods to try. There are all kinds of special paints and materials to use for fabric art that can be incorporated into quilting. I keep binders of ideas to try for quilts and fabric art. I will never run out of ideas! I also love working with yarns to crochet, do punch needle embroidery and beading. For those of you who get enthused by fabric art and quilting, there is a magazine called Quilting Arts that also has a web site called Interweave with many great ideas in the magazine and online. They have an online store as well. Another business for textile art materials is Dharma Trading. There are numerous great quilt stores in the Twin Cities area. The selection and colors at these shops are very inspiring. Time for a road trip in our area for textile art!
